When Brett Morgen and I first discussed my contribution to Montage Of Heck, it immediately became clear that unlike our other collaborations, original music would be unnecessary , and indeed aesthetically wrong. Brett’s rightful mandate that ‘everything should emanate from Kurt’ meant that I would be adapting Kurt’s existing, iconic songs in new ways. From dreamy, childlike ‘ice-cream truck’ versions of songs like Lithium, to a churning, hammering rendering of Smells Like Teen Spirit, Montage of Heck was a challenge and a joy every day.
